BARRIO Makes Renovating the Building Stock Easier and Faster

On 23 and 24 October, the partners of the Barrio project, which promotes the comprehensive energy renovation of neighbourhoods, met in Faenza (Italy). To accelerate the process of decarbonisation of the building sector in Europe, we are addressing the challenges of a fragmented renovation process. Over the period of three years, the LIFE programme BARRIO project will develop a tool to improve accessibility to refurbishment services, stimulate renovation of larger space units, introduce tailored business models and support the commercialisation of industrial refurbishment solutions.

The project, coordinated by the Italian institute CERTIMAC, brings together partners from Spain (Instituto Valenciano de la Edificacion fundacion, UBIK geospatial solutions, B. LINK Barcelona strategic projects), Slovenia (IRI UL), Bulgaria (FONDATSIYA TSENTAR FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY – EnEffect and Econoler) and Belgium (Comite Europeen de coordination de l’habitat socail ASIBL – Housing Europe). The total budget is €2 million.

The project will develop a multidisciplinary renovation planning tool that will allow clustering buildings into neighbourhoods or groups of buildings with specific characteristics according to selected criteria, comparing different models, selecting renovation interventions and an action plan for its implementation. The tool will be developed in pilot areas in Slovenia, Spain, Italy and Bulgaria, with the support of key stakeholders on both the supply and demand side.

The project will result in a tool for matching supply and demand at local level, and the model will be transferable to any European or global city.
