Learning and Networking at the Summer School on Positive Energy Districts in Graz

Last week, our colleague Anja, along with her colleague Jernej from the Laboratory for Energy Policy, attended the summer school titled Economics and Replication of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs), which was held as part of the EXCESS project and IEA EBC Annex 83 Positive Energy Districts in Graz, Austria. Most of the lectures and workshops took place in the iconic Science Tower. The Science Tower is a 14-story landmark in the smart city district of Graz and is completely decarbonized. It features photovoltaic panels in the facade and a beautiful rooftop vegetable garden, where the summer school participants enjoyed the produce.

Throughout the week, there were various interesting lectures complemented by group work and a site visit to one of the demonstration sites of the EXCESS project. Topics covered included modeling and simulation, flexibility, certification, life cycle analysis, and life cycle costing. The summer school provided a unique opportunity to acquire valuable knowledge and exchange experiences with leading experts in the field of positive energy districts. The lectures also covered economic models from the EBENTO project, in which the Institute for Innovation and Development of University of Ljubljana is involved.

Anja particularly highlighted how valuable the conversations with other participants and lecturers were, as they provided insights into the latest research and technologies in this field. Additionally, participants formed connections that might lead to future collaborations. The knowledge she gained will be beneficial for her continued work at the Institute for Innovation and Development of University of Ljubljana.
