BUILD UP Skills United (BUSUnited) is a European collaborative project under the LIFE Clean Energy Transition programme that aims to strengthen and connect expertise on sustainable energy skills in the construction sector across Europe. Building on more than a decade of experience from the BUILD UP Skills initiative, BUSUnited brings together practitioners, policy actors, training providers, industry representatives and umbrella organisations to accelerate the upskilling and reskilling of building professionals.

The project focuses on creating a strong EU-wide community of practitioners, enabling knowledge exchange, peer learning and coordinated action to support the large-scale implementation of national and European skills strategies aligned with the European Green Deal and the EU’s 2050 climate-neutrality objective.

BUSUnited aims to:

  • Establish and support a dynamic EU community of practitioners active in sustainable energy skills for the built environment
  • Foster pan-European collaboration through thematic Communities of Practice addressing shared challenges
  • Support the implementation of national BUILD UP Skills roadmaps and EU-level skills initiatives
  • Promote innovative training approaches, skills recognition mechanisms and demand-side strategies
  • Strengthen long-term capacity building and ensure the sustainability and replication of successful approaches

BUSUnited applies a challenge-based Community of Practice (CoP) approach to connect practitioners, policy actors, training providers and industry stakeholders working on sustainable energy skills in the construction sector. Through thematic Communities of Practice, the project enables structured knowledge exchange, peer learning and joint problem-solving on shared challenges such as skills needs, innovative training methods, skills recognition and national roadmap implementation. Activities combine online collaboration with targeted in-person exchanges at national and European levels, supporting convergence towards best practices and long-term capacity building.

The Innovation and Development Institute of the University of Ljubljana (IRI UL) contributes to BUSUnited through its expertise in applied social sciences, participatory research and community-based methodologies. IRI UL supports the conceptual development and facilitation of the Communities of Practice by integrating social learning, stakeholder engagement and anthropologically informed approaches, helping to strengthen collaboration, inclusiveness and the long-term sustainability of practitioner networks within the project.
