The BARRIO project addresses the challenge of implementing larger-scale renovations and the fragmentation of renovation activities on both the supply and demand sides. The construction sector in Europe accounts for 36% of greenhouse gas emissions and 40% of energy consumption, with 75% of buildings in the Union still being energy inefficient. The aim of the EU strategy “Renovation Wave for Europe” is to at least double the annual rate of energy renovation of buildings by 2030 and to promote comprehensive renovations. To achieve climate neutrality, EU countries are striving to overcome obstacles faced by stakeholders in building stock renovations and to shift the focus from individual building renovations to neighborhood-wide renovations.
The main goal of the BARRIO project is to accelerate the building stock renovation process. We aim to achieve this by improving access to renovation services, addressing larger spatial units (e.g., neighborhoods), introducing tailored business models, and supporting the development and marketing of industrial solutions for renovations.
In the project, we will develop a multidisciplinary renovation planning tool that enables the grouping of buildings into neighborhoods or clusters with comparable characteristics based on selected criteria, allowing for the comparison of different models, the selection of a renovation approach, and an action plan for implementation. The tool will be developed in pilot areas in Slovenia, Spain, Italy, and Bulgaria, with support from key stakeholders on both the supply and demand sides.
The outcome of the project will be a tool designed to align supply and demand at the local level, with a model that can be adapted to any European or global city.
