The RE-HOME project addresses Europe’s housing paradox: many dwellings remain vacant or underused while cities face rising housing needs, affordability crises and increasing pressure to develop greenfield land. By using existing buildings and space more efficiently, in line with the principles of sufficiency and adaptability and the values of the New European Bauhaus, the project will promote affordable, sustainable and inclusive housing.
In the four pilot cities – Chalandri (Greece), Mechelen (Belgium), La Rochelle (France) and Hrastnik (Slovenia) – municipalities and their local partners will co-design place-based strategies for the reuse of vacant and underused buildings. Pilot activities will include the adaptive reuse of cultural heritage buildings, home-sharing and co-living models, densification combined with the preservation of high-quality green spaces, and the reactivation of vacant municipal housing for vulnerable groups. Altogether, the pilot activities will prepare or transform more than 80 housing units.
In Hrastnik, the project will support the reactivation of a municipal building comprising 14 housing units, four of which will be comprehensively renovated to provide temporary accommodation for vulnerable groups.
The project will also develop a transferable methodology and practical toolkit to facilitate the replication of solutions in other contexts. In addition, ten housing micro-experiments will be implemented in other European cities.
