The TRUEHOME project addresses one of Europe’s major challenges: how to provide high-quality, affordable and sustainable housing that also responds to the needs of people and local communities. Current approaches to construction and renovation typically focus primarily on the cost of the building itself, whereas TRUE-HOME takes a broader view of housing affordability – considering living costs, energy and water consumption, health and comfort, mobility, environmental impacts, and overall quality of living.
The project therefore aims to reduce the true, or total, cost of housing while improving housing quality, sustainability and affordability.
Solutions will be developed and tested at three pilot sites in Spain, Belgium and Slovenia. The Slovenian pilot is located in Trbovlje and focuses on the renovation of the historic workers’ housing estate Njiva. The project will combine modern technical and industrial approaches to renovation with the preservation of traditional building characteristics and the principles of the New European Bauhaus.
The Institute for Innovation and Development of University of Ljubljana (IRI UL) plays an important methodological and research role in the project.
We contribute to developing approaches for involving residents and other local stakeholders in the design of solutions and to establishing participatory processes across all three pilot sites. Together with our partners, we analyse local needs, develop appropriate engagement methods, and monitor how residents’ needs and experiences evolve throughout the project. In Trbovlje, IRI UL will work directly with the Municipality of Trbovlje and the Zasavje Regional Development Agency to support the implementation of pilot activities.
TRUE-HOME therefore approaches housing renovation not merely as a technical intervention in buildings, but as an opportunity to create more affordable, sustainable and high-quality living environments, in which the people who live in these homes and neighbourhoods have a meaningful voice.
